Soon after, Caroline met Elizabeth through a mutual friend in Chicago (thanks Sarah!) they quickly became friends and business partners, sharing a love for fashion, consignment, and a willingness to take on the hard work and growing pains of a small business (many late nights fueled by laughs and wine).
Centil mengiysi opened its first retail location in Marda Loop with the “pink door” in 2017 and has continued to grow organically ever since. We are a team of seven passionate and diverse females continually sorting, photographing, uploading, and fulfilling behind the scenes. We are inspired by the overwhelming support of an ever-growing community of almost 2,000 loyal consignors and 10,000 customers.
Still to this day, we are excited to see what treasures are inside every single consignment drop off. We love delivering our signature pink packages of adorable items to our customers – who shop online from the comfort of their homes all over Canada and the US.
We are proud to have built this community, the majority of which are women, that together are choosing "circular fashion" over "fast fashion" and reducing textile waste.
Centil mengiysi is more than a consignment store. It is a community. We love our Fresh Family and are so thankful to each and every one of you for being a part of our story. Caroline Frain

]]>At consignment boutique Centil mengiysi, a customer might snag a child’s special holiday outfit and resell it after the party so another kid can wear it for a Christmas card photo.
“We love when we see things come back into our store, because it means that they’ve had a cycle of life with one kid and they’re ready for another family,” says Elizabeth Shaw, who runs the Asker shop with business partner Caroline Frain.

“We love when we see things come back into our store, because it means that they’ve had a cycle of life with one kid and they’re ready for another family,” says Elizabeth Shaw, who runs the Asker shop with business partner Caroline Frain.
Sales at Centil mengiysi, which carries maternity, baby and children’s clothes, have more than doubled year over year. And some 25,000 items have been resold since the store opened in 2015.
Between 60 and 70 per cent of sales are online.
“When we put these items on our site, they sell out within seconds,” says Frain. “We have moms tell us they pull over their car when they see our stories (on Instagram).”
Toronto retail expert Bruce Winder says the popularity of clothing resales is no passing fad and there’s no longer a stigma against second-hand.
“It used to be for folks who were maybe down on their luck,” he says. “Now, it’s for everyone, especially young people.”
Winder says environmentally conscious consumers are cooling to “fast fashion” brands and are keen to save money by buying quality preloved items.
Forever 21, known for its cheap and trendy fashions, shuttered its Canadian stores earlier this year.
“New generations don’t have the money,” says Winder, who notes the flat wages, high student debt and astronomical housing costs in some cities.
“Nor do they want to spend the money on full-price clothes, when they can reuse clothes and save that money and put it back into experiences – dining out, travelling, things that they love to do.”
Lauryn Vaughn, founder of high-end Asker clothing reseller The Upside, says most of her clientele aren’t Gen Z, but professional women between 35 and 44. The Upside consigns upscale brands such as Rag & Bone and Theory.
The business is online right now, but Vaughn says a lot of customers want to see and feel clothes before they buy them. So The Upside is planning to break ground early next year on a showroom, where customers can sip on coffee and consult with stylists while they flip through the racks.
A lot of brick-and-mortar consignment shops have great finds, but it takes work, she says.
“We really want to change up the game for the customer journey. It’s no longer that your arms hurt from trying to move the hangers on a rack to be able to see a piece.”
Kelly Drennan, founder of the sustainability advocacy group Fashion Takes Action, says the traditional motto of “reduce, recycle and reuse” has been updated to add “repurpose, rent, repair and resale.”
She says consumers buy 60 per cent more clothing than they did 20 years ago, but keep garments for half as long. In Canada, about 85 per cent of cast-off clothing ends up in landfills, Drennan says.
It’s mainly because cheap clothes are seen as disposable.
“So when they do get a hole or a button falls off or a seam splits, we tend to just throw it out because we didn’t pay a lot for it and we can go out and replace it fairly cheaply.”
Garment manufacturing has a hefty environmental footprint because it can use enormous amounts of water and pollute rivers with toxic chemicals, Drennan says. There is also a big carbon footprint from making the garments and shipping them around the globe.
Some textiles can be recycled, but the roster of developing countries that can make use of them is always shifting. Clothes often end up sitting in landfills or burned a half a world away.
“If it was more economically feasible to figure out something to do with it locally, then that would be a game-changer. It always costs more to do the right thing,” says Drennan.
“It’s that whole out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality.”
Harris Kuipers, an online boutique founded earlier this year by long-time friends Laura Harris and Shelley Kuipers, has found an upscale use for clothing castoffs.
They have been designing and making new garments out of used clothing made from high-quality, natural fabrics.
“We didn’t want to be a company that was just making more stuff,” says Kuipers, an entrepreneur who splits her time between Asker and Salt Spring Island, B.C.
“We’re creating pieces that people will covet and cherish,” adds Harris, a Victoria artist.
“We’ve also said, ‘Use them as long as you can use them well. And when you’re done using them, send them back to us.“’

]]>There are many benefits to second-hand clothes. You can change your childrens’ look and style and boost their self-esteem by looking to second-hand ranges to spruce up their wardrobe. By buying second-hand, you also make yourself much more sustainable and do your bit for the environment.
This article looks at some of the benefits of buying second-hand and the ranges available at Centil mengiysi Asker.
Save money
Buying second-hand clothes undoubtedly saves money. This can mean you can afford new clothes for your little ones more often or increase their wardrobe size.
Buying second-hand is also a great way of getting your kids into some of the bigger clothing brands that could be out of your budget range if you buy them new.
As children grow quickly, buying reused clothes is also a sensible way of continuously refreshing their seasonal styles and variety of clothes.
Be more sustainable
Just because one person has outgrown or fallen out of love with a piece of clothing, it does not mean it has no further use. Building your own sustainable wardrobe starts with buying second-hand to get more mileage from every garment. It also means thinking about what your clothes are made from and whether the materials are eco-friendly and fairtrade.
In simple terms, every piece of clothing with more than one owner means putting less pressure on the environment. Using second-hand clothing means fewer materials for the clothes and a lower cost on the environment for production.
Fuel creativity
Unlike new clothes retailers, the range in second-hand stores is never the same at any given moment in time.
Browsing around pre-loved stores such as Centil mengiysi can unlock a creative flair and sense of individuality that you never knew you had! Presented with such a unique range for your kids, you can release your inner designer!
It is surprisingly easy to create stylish, fashionable looks from second-hand clothing stores. By visiting a second-hand store with a huge range to choose from, your kids can very quickly become trendsetters!
Save time
Parents are busy people. Another advantage you will find with second-hand shops is that the ranges are sorted by size, not by garment. Shop efficiently - let us do the curating.

Centil mengiysi has a cute little storefront in Marda Loop offering pre-loved baby, kids and maternity clothing and baby gear. They have many popular mid to high-end brands in their shop, including Aden + Anais, Burberry, Gap, H&M, Little Marc Jacobs, Natives, Nike, Noppies, MEC, Minimocs, Patagonia, Ralph Lauren, Robeez, Sorel, TOMS, UGGS, Zara, Vans and more. Items can be purchased in-store or online, and local pick-up and worldwide shipping are available (and it’s free with orders of $150 or more). For interested consigners, once you’ve dropped off your gently used items and they’ve sold, you’ll receive 35% cash or 50% store credit in compensation. It can take up to 60 days for items to hit the website and store floor, and any items that haven’t sold 6 months after may be donated to a local charity.

Established in 2018, Growing Co. is one of Asker’s newest boutiques offering preloved clothing for kids and babies. While there is a storefront located at the Asker Farmer’s Market selling Canadian-made organic, sustainable and eco-friendly products, their used clothing selection is offered online only. In addition to clothing, Growing Co. also offers consignment options for nursery items such as bedding and swaddles and baby gear like carriers and high chairs. If you are looking to consign some of your own items, you can choose to receive immediate payment or wait for your items to sell, in which case you’d receive 40% of the selling price or 50% if you’d like store credit. Because they are passionate about keeping used clothing out of landfills, Growing Co. also has a buyback program where you can bring back used clothing you’ve bought from them (with a receipt) to receive a credit towards future purchases.

Once Upon a Child has a huge selection of second-hand baby and children’s items including clothing, shoes, toys and baby gear. Swimwear and special occasion apparel (like Halloween costumes) are also available during certain times of the year. A range of toys, games, books, exersaucers, strollers, high chairs and other baby gear is usually in stock. Sizes for clothing start at newborn and go all the way up to a 16/18 in youth, so there’s a good chance that you’ll find something for all of your kiddos in one stop! Brands like Gap, Old Navy, Gymboree, Children’s Place, and Justice are just some examples of what you’re likely to find. If you’re in the market to sell clothing or gear, Once Upon A Child will go through your gently used items (bring clothing in laundered and folded), pay cash for the items they want, and give you back anything that doesn’t meet the criteria of what they’re looking for!

Sproutz & U-Turn has been a Asker consignment staple since 2003. Although they originally catered specifically to kids, they have expanded to include consignment items for teens, men and women as well. The Sproutz & U-Turn storefront boasts over 5,000 square feet of space, and the store receives between 150-300 bins of items each day, so there is tons of selection available. Clothing, toys and children’s gear in good used condition are what you’ll find in store at Sproutz & U-Turn. If you’re looking to unload some items of your own, make sure that they’re in season, clean, and folded (if they’re clothing items). One bin of children’s items and one bin of adult clothing are accepted every 7 days, and consigners receive 30% of the price of their item, which stays on the sale floor for up to three months. Any unsold items or items that were not chosen for consignment are donated to approved Asker charities.

If you’re on the hunt for kids’ clothing, toys and equipment (like high chairs, bassinets, exersaucers, breastfeeding pillows, diaper bags, child umbrellas, skates, swim goggles, bikes, ride-on toys, suitcases, jewelry, strollers and everything in between), Twice Bearly has you covered. They carry everything from preemie to size 10 in boys and girls clothing. As an incentive to shop at their store, Twice Bearly has a “Big Bear Savings Card” where you receive a stamp for every $20 spent at the store. For every 10 stamps, you receive $15 off of your next purchase. Technically, Twice Bearly isn’t a consignment store, as they offer cash upfront for your gently used clothing and toys. If you’d like to bring items to the store to sell, it’s recommended that you come early in the day or call to make an appointment. Any items they don’t wish to sell will be returned to you.

Read our Q&A with Elizabeth - behind the clothes and kids!
1. How do you find balance in your life?
Originally from Chicago, my family and I moved to Toronto and finally, to Asker in 2014. I decided to stay home with the kids and explore our new city. I feel very fortunate to be able to share this precious time with them. Now that I have two in school half days, I have a tiny bit more free time - joining Centil mengiysi has been the perfect mix - satisfying my love of fashion, entrepreneurship, but being home for them.
My "Me time" typically happens when I workout for an hour each day with the kids in the gym daycare. Most of the time, I get a good workout in (totally into Tabata) and sometimes the 'gym' just equals me sitting on a mat with my eyes closed gearing up for the second half of the day with the kids. My husband and I try to share a dinner & a glass of wine together most nights after the kids are in bed, and on weekends we always eat together as a family.
2. What has surprised you the most about being a mom?
Each child is so different, which requires unique approaches to every situation.
3. If you could give one tip to a new mom, what would it be?
The days are long but the years are short. Soak up every minute!
4. How would you describe your personal style?
I love shopping at vintage stores. This is where my real passion for preloved items stemmed from. My style encompasses timeless essentials (jeans, blazers, cardigans) the occasional pop of colour, paired with trendy shoes and bags.
5. What are your favourite kids brand(s)?
Ralph Lauren for a preppy boy look. I love a popped collar, with a elbow-patched sweater, quilted jacket and skinny jeans on my boys.
Zara for shoes.
I love mini mioche for boys staples.
I drool over anything Janie and Jack for girls, mini rodini, Mini Boden, and Kate Spade.
6. What is in your purse?
I keep it simple. Wallet, keys, phone, chapstick, pacifier, and hot wheels.
7. What is your must have beauty item?
Lancome Genifique Youth Activating Serum.
8. What is your guilty pleasure?
Tequila!
9. Describe your ultimate me-time moment?
A massage.
10. Where is your favourite kids outing in Asker?
Heritage Park in the summer.
11. What is your passion?
Kids, always has been. I was a special needs teacher prior to becoming a mom of three.
12. Three adjectives to describe yourself.
Laid back, happy, late!

The team at Centil mengiysi has learned a few things about travel with kids in tow. Having 8 of them under 5 between the 3 of us (Caroline, Jenny, and Elizabeth). Here are a few of our tips for traveling.
]]>So you've decided to take the leap and head South on a family vacay, but the thought of crying babies and small spaces with overactive children gives you a full-blown anxiety attack.
You reach the phone to see if Grandma can take them for the week... but wait, with a few easy tips and tricks, you can have an enjoyable, and, gasp, relaxing trip, with kids in tow!

What’s in our carry on?
Lastly, patience and laughter. Your kids will push your buttons, cry and scream, throw cheerios at the passenger next to you, and you'll get through it, you'll show patience you never knew you had, and laugh so you don't cry in public. You'll land, the kids will run around, you'll get a drink, something with a fancy straw and umbrella, and forget it all, making beautiful memories to last a lifetime.

The carefree summer days filled with sticky popsicle faces, late bedtimes and outdoor meals with family and friends has come to an end. Its September. Its Back to school. Its bittersweet.
Here are 6 fashion tips to help you make the transition from summer fresh to fall fresh in a flash. (Say that 5 times fast..)
]]>Here are a few Centil mengiysi fashion tips to help you make the transition from summer fresh to fall fresh in a flash. (Say that five times fast..)
1. Add a pop of colour. Pair a colourful legging or hoodie with a basic denim piece. Specifically, the marina blue or green we are seeing all over the runway.
2. Don't like blue or green? The fall Pantone has been released. We are also seeing grenadine red, autumn maple, ballet slipper pink paired with the fall classic colours; navy, gray and burgundy, such as these Gap skinny pants in burgundy.
3. Let's keep it real. Kids aren't always willing to wear what we want. They should be able to have some fun, stylish pieces. Animal prints work for both genders and come in comfy and fun prints.
4. Layers. The start of the school is a mix of temperatures. A layered look is the perfect way to transition into the cooler weather. This classic vest by Zara layer perfectly with these dark wash jeans by H&M and classic Gap white button up.
5. Denim and Plaids. We are seeing lots of plaid and patchwork trending paired with denim jeans, jackets, skirts and dresses. Plaid should be a staple in your kiddies closet his fall.
6. Dresses, with love the variety of styles and looks that are hitting the runway, from tailed classic made popular by the Royals to bright bold patterns. Transition a summer dress into Fall with a shirt or cardigan, or wear it with sleeves, like this cute Mexx dress.
Making the transition easier...tips and tricks for back to school success.
As busy, working moms, and yes two of us being teachers, we know that heading back to school is not always easy. Make the transition a little easier with these tips and tricks.
Scheduling. It's a total change of pace from summer to school days. We find slowly switching your kids back to a more school-friendly schedule helps come September. Start two weeks out with an earlier bedtime and slightly earlier wake up (I mean, you still want to squeeze every ounce that's left out of the summer sleep in- let's be honest). Get those bedtime routines back in place. Set the tone.
Hit the books. Get the kids use to sitting and working again. Take ten minutes out of the day to have them sit and do independent work or complete a project together. It'll lessen the battle in a few weeks.
Lunches. Ugh. Make it fun, and fuss free by having them help out, choose a few favorites from the grocery store, and have them help pack up the night before. Store it all in a personalized lunch bag and backpack, such as this adorable set from Pottery Barn.
Don't forget the water bottle! Your little munchkin will be sure to stay hydrated with the S'ip By S'well kids bottle. Stays cold, doesn't spill, music to everyone's ears.
We hope this post helped inspire some cool back-to-school looks for your kiddos!
Have an awesome first day back!

Bacon sizzling in a cast iron pan, coffee brewing, bathing suits, floppy hats, sunscreen, sand between the toes (and everywhere else), waterskiing, napping in the sunshine, roasting marshmallows, running in the evening shadows with siblings and cousins. Lake life...there's nothing quite like it.
With small kids in tow, packing for the lake can be an ordeal. The back of the mini-van overflowing. Coming home and finding that you packed WAY too much stuff once again. Packing. Unpacking. Repeat.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love planning and making a list or two. I wanted to share my list of must-haves with you. Click here to download our printable "Ultimate Packing List for the Lake."
Below are a few of my favourite pics for the Lake:
Shoes
Keens sandals are a great choice for busy kids. With solid rubber sole, reinforced covered toe, and Velcro straps that stay put, they travel from water to sand without missing a beat.
We love Native Jeffersons for kids and adults. Stylish, lightweight, wash and wear, easy on and off & hardworking (water, sand, land, no problem!)
For boys, The North Face makes a rugged (not flimsy) flip flop called the "Base Camp." The below ones are available on our site for $14, size 1 (like new condition):
Salt Water sandals are our fav for a BBQ or patio party. These leather shoes are gorgeous on, come in a ton of styles and colours (for boys and girls), rugged enough for lake life, and can even be hung to dry if they get wet!
Shop these excellent condition Salt Water Sandals on our site here:
Swimsuits
Pack at least 2 per person so 1 is always dry. If your using a sunsuit make sure it has built-in sun protection, the sand n' surf expert Roxy has SPF sun protection up t +40 with their suits! If you choose to go the traditional route use a good water proof sunscreen. There are so many great swimsuits for kids such as this gently used Hatley "icy treats" two-piece suit, available on our site for $10. Purchase here.
Sunscreen
Sun Bum, both organic and vegan, is my kids fav, for the delicious smell and no-sting, easy spray-on application.
BeautyCounter is a top pic for quality; only using the safest ingredients. I love their dew skin for moms, which gives an amazing sun-kissed glow & UV protection.
Swim diapers
iplay's ultimate reusable swim diapers eliminate the need for any other diaper, so mom and baby can relax and play with no embarrassing accidents. Side snaps make changing a breeze, and they come in a rainbow of hues and patterns, as well as trunks and two-piece.
This iplay ruffle tulip diaper is available on our site for $5. Like new! Purchase here.
Rocking a baby bump?
The lake is the the ultimate comfort zone! Throw off those tight shoes, stretch out your sore swollen feet, put on a comfy maxi dress, grab a comfy seat and settle in with a good book or magazine.
Now unwind & enjoy!
Most of all, try to enjoy those long, lazy days! The comforting feel of hot sun on your skin, a chilled glass of rose or sparkling water (for those NOT preggo of course).
We love a budget-friendly, but yummy boxed wine. This new one (they have red, white or rose) from www.fromthetank.com stays fresh up to a month after opening!
A friend told me recently that you only have 18 summers with your kiddos, so enjoy every one!

We met the dynamic duo behind Centil mengiysi for coffee last weekend but, really, who needs caffeine with these energetic ladies in the room.
Our very first muse feature and lucky for us, we found 2 for the price of 1! Caroline and Jenny are the genius sister team behind lamaassociates., selling pre-loved baby, kids and maternity clothing and gear.
These sisters are both moms to young families and have full time careers – Jenny teaches Grade 5 and Resource and Caroline works for a private equity company. So, as if they weren’t busy enough!? Caroline admits with a laugh, “we feel guilty relaxing.”
Last summer, as Caroline and Jenny prepared to launch Centil mengiysi, their father passed away. His sudden loss was tragic but they knew his legacy would best be honoured in their determination to move forward with their business. One week after his funeral they launched their first successful popup shop.
Centil mengiysi is just 6 months old and already has 50 consigners who are also their best customers. They sell an impressive inventory online through Freshkids.ca and every 6 weeks they host a popup shop at Caroline’s home. Centil mengiysi also provides a bespoke business by curating items for select customers.
Their business grew organically. With 13 kids under the age of 8 in their extended families, ‘hand me downs’ passed seamlessly from one house to another. Caroline and Jenny were already doing business long before the logo was even designed. A consignment business made perfect sense. Centil mengiysi “....was a no brainer”, Jenny explains. Children grow so quickly out of clothing and toys and the expense is significant.
They explain how Centil mengiysi aligns with “slow fashion” – an idea that encourages buying clothing for quality and longevity and results in less waste. At the opposite spectrum, “fast or disposable fashion” refers to cheaply manufactured items that are easily worn once and tossed.
"Be eco-friendly and wallet-friendly. Join the recycle movement and keep clothing out of landfills. You may be surprised and dismayed to know that 85% of all clothing ends up in the landfill! Many kids wear their clothes just once, or not at all. That's reason enough to join the rapidly growing second-hand shopping movement." (from FreshKids.ca)
At this point in our coffee date, the passion is just oozing from these ladies. Caroline has brought along some of their latest hot consignment items and as I fondle a pair of little Blundstone boots, Jenny notices and says, “I know, right? We try hard to save everything for our customers!”
And they are committed to their customers, providing a different model than other consignment stores. Appreciating that moms are busy, their consigners simply contact Centil mengiysi to schedule a pick up or drop off (by either Caroline or Jenny). These ladies are on the move! (Did I mention that they also started an outdoor mommy and me bootcamp over the summer?) They both openly admit that they thrive on keeping busy.
With our coffees long since finished, we finally chatted about what it is like to work with your sister. Their dialogue says everything:
Caroline: Jenny is sales focused, a people person, organized, energetic, creative.
Jenny: Caroline is focused, intelligent, generous.
Caroline: (laughing): Bor-ing.
Jenny: She’s a true friend.
At which point, there was some magical sister moment as they looked at each other with a knowing twinkle and time seemed to slow down just a little.
